The word is used to describe several very hard, heavy and dense woods around the world. It roughly means ironwood.

In the aquarium trade, ironwood can therefore mean different things depending on the supplier. The most important thing is not the name, but whether the wood is intended for aquariums, how it is treated and how it behaves in water.

Why is it called ironwood?

The name comes from the fact that the wood is heavy and hard. Many ironwood types are so dense that they sink more easily than more porous woods. This can be an advantage in aquariums because the root does not need as long to stay on the bottom.

Hardness can also make wood durable. But it doesn't automatically tell you anything about the origin, finish, chemistry or suitability for your aquarium.

Benefits of ironwood in aquariums

If it is an aquarium-safe ironwood from a reputable source, it can be a good hardscape material. It can be heavy, durable and give a powerful expression.

It is often suitable when you want a root that feels compact and stable, or when you don't want to wait long for the wood to sink.

Disadvantages and questions to ask

As ironwood is not a single precise material, one should ask what it actually is. Where does the wood come from? Is it treated? Is it sandblasted? Is it intended for aquariums? Is there experience of how it affects water?

Harder wood can also feel more dead or smooth in appearance, depending on the piece and treatment. This is not automatically wrong, but it gives a different feel to old bogwood with a natural finish.

Ironwood compared to Tuskwood

Ironwood is often chosen for hardness, weight and a robust look. Tuskwood is chosen for a different kind of value: old bogwood, natural surface, deep colour, unique shape and clear Nordic origin.

Tuskwood is not interesting because it tries to be the hardest. It is interesting because it is an ancient natural material that has been moulded and preserved in peat bogs for a very long time.

In short

Ironwood is a broad name for hard and heavy woods. It can work in aquariums if it comes from a reliable source and is intended for it.

But if you want a root with a clear history, natural finish, deep colour and precise WYSIWYG shape, Tuskwood is a more specific and traceable choice.

Ironwood is not a single species, but a trade name for very hard and heavy woods.
