What is winewood?

Winewood is a trade name often used for grapevine, grapevine or similar twisted branches. It can be very decorative, especially in terrariums, vivariums and dry environments.

In aquariums, you need to be more careful.

Why does winewood look so attractive?

Vine can have beautiful, twisted shapes. It looks natural, dramatic and organic. On a shelf or in a terrarium, it can give a lot of shape for the money.

It's easy to understand why you would want to use it in an aquarium. The problem is that a nice shape doesn't automatically mean that the wood is good under water.

The problem with grapevine in aquariums

Grapevine and similar woods can be softer and more easily degradable than classic aquarium woods. Under water, it can produce biofilm, mould-like coatings and faster decomposition.

That's not to say that every piece of winewood is immediately dangerous. But it's not a material I would choose as a safe first choice for a submerged aquarium, especially with delicate fish or shrimp.

If it is sold as aquarium safe

If a shop sells winewood specifically for aquariums, ask how it is prepared, whether it has been tested under water and how long it is expected to last. Be extra careful with wood that is actually intended for reptile cages or decor in dry environments.

Never use wood that has been varnished, oiled, coloured, glued or treated with unknown substances.

Winewood compared to Tuskwood

Winewood is chosen above all for its shape. Tuskwood is chosen for its material, history and stability in water.

Tuskwood is genuine old bogwood that has been preserved in a low oxygen peat bog environment. It is made to serve as an aquarium root for the long term, not just look pretty in the first week.

In short

Winewood is often vine or grapevine. It can be decorative, but is not always a good choice as submerged aquarium wood as it can degrade more quickly and produce deposits.

If you want a safe, stable and long-lasting root in your aquarium, the Tuskwood is a better choice.
