Tuskwood Ancient Bogwood

Genuine bogwood, hand-picked from Nordic peat bogs where it has been naturally preserved for up to 8000 years. This unique process partially mineralises the wood, impregnating it with humic substances, making it durable and beautifully coloured in dark reddish brown. Tuskwood Ancient Bogwood is a highly sought-after type of root for aquariums and aquascaping.

  • Long lifespan: Partly mineralised and extremely durable.
  • Positive for the water environment: Promotes balance and health in the aquarium.
  • No biofilm: Normally does not form any slime on the wood.
  • Durable and locally produced: Carefully hand-picked in the Nordics.
  • Clear water: The wood's effect on the colour of the water is normally extremely limited and short lived.

Description of the root's character

This Tuskwood root S2342620 has a distinctive U-shape with two upright, robust parts rising from a stable horizontal base. The surface is naturally textured with minor root threads and irregularities.

Suggestions for aquarium styles and planting ideas

Its shape makes it ideal as a central focal point in an aquarium, especially in an Iwagumi or Ryoboku-inspired arrangement. The upright parts offer excellent attachment points for epiphytic plants such as Anubias, Bucephalandra and Java fern. Mosses can be attached to the entire root to create a softer, more natural feel. The horizontal base can be integrated with the substrate and surrounded by lower Cryptocoryne or emphasised with taller Vallisneria in the background to enhance depth.

Measurements of the root

  • Length: 49 cm
  • Height: 36 cm
  • Depth: 18 cm

Suggested aquarium format and size

Measuring 49cm in length, 36cm in height and 18cm in depth/width, this root fits well in medium to large aquariums. Each Tuskwood root is unique, and you buy exactly the root shown in the picture.

Benefits of Tuskwood

  • Genuine mineralised bogwood / bog wood
  • Long lifespan
  • Normally no biofilm or slime formation
  • Works in both hard and soft water
  • Reliable sinking ability, normally sinking within 2-4 weeks
  • Naturally beautiful colour tones in dark brown with a slightly reddish tinge under water

Unlike common spiderwood, manzanita, mangrove or Malaysian driftwood, Tuskwood comes from Europe and has formed naturally in Nordic peatlands. The mineralisation and impregnation with humic substances make the wood durable and beautiful.

Tuskwood slowly releases natural humic substances that support fish health. However, the effect on the colour of the water is minimal and usually not noticeable.

  • Stable, mild release of humic substances
  • Positive for fish wellbeing
  • Mildly antimicrobial

A more sustainable choice

Much of the wood sold for aquascaping comes from tropical forests in Asia and is shipped halfway around the globe.

Tuskwood is a Nordic natural material, collected locally as a by-product of other land use. This makes it a more sustainable choice, free from unregulated tropical deforestation, destruction of mangrove swamps or unworthy working conditions. Tuskwood stands for minimal transport and supports the local economy and jobs.

Tuskwood is a very small company, and we use AI to help us focus on quality and delivery. The aquascape renderings, translations into languages other than Swedish, and the description of the individual piece of wood on this page were created with the help of AI and may contain minor errors.
