About the plant
Spirodela polyrrhiza, greater duckweed, is a freely floating plant with small, round green leaf discs that give the aquarium a calm, pond-like character. Its dense surface layer creates shade and shelter for fish while the plant takes surplus nutrients from the water. Its rapid growth can therefore help limit algae’s access to both light and nutrients. It suits beginners as well as experienced aquarists who want to work actively with the surface zone.
Planting and care
Let the plant float freely in low to moderate light. Thin it regularly so the surface is not completely covered and the plants beneath still receive enough light.
